WhatsApp Broadcast: The Complete Guide (Without Getting Banned)
Reach thousands of customers at once, the way that keeps your number safe.
A single WhatsApp broadcast can reach a thousand customers in the time it takes to type one message, or get your number restricted by the end of the day. The difference is entirely in how you do it.
A whatsapp broadcast sends the same message individually to a list of contacts who have opted in to hear from you, arriving in each person's chat as if you messaged them directly, not in a shared thread where everyone sees each other.
Broadcast vs Group vs Bulk
These three terms get used interchangeably, but they're different:
- Broadcast — one-to-many, each recipient sees it as a private message from you, and with WaSMS you can reach anyone who has opted in, not just people who already have your number saved
- Group — a shared thread where everyone sees everyone else's messages, better suited to community than announcements
- Bulk — the general act of sending many messages at once, which could be a broadcast, could be order confirmations, or could be replies across many open conversations; see WhatsApp bulk messaging for the sending mechanics that apply either way
The Consent Rule That Keeps You Safe
WhatsApp requires that recipients have agreed to receive messages from your business before you broadcast to them. That agreement can be a checkbox at checkout, a reply of "yes" to a prompt, or a sign-up form field, but it has to exist. Never import a list you bought or scraped.
Keep written proof of consent, including a timestamp and the exact wording the customer agreed to. If WhatsApp ever reviews your account, or a customer disputes it, this is what protects your number.

Building Your List
In WaSMS, import your opted-in contacts from a CSV, or connect the signup form or checkout flow where customers already agree to WhatsApp updates. Tag contacts as you import them, by source, interest, or customer type, since those tags are what you'll use to segment later.
Sending Your First WhatsApp Broadcast
In WaSMS, go to Broadcast, then New Broadcast, choose the segment you want to reach, and compose your message. If you're messaging someone outside the 24-hour window since their last reply to you, WhatsApp requires an approved template message rather than free-form text, so submit your template ahead of time. Schedule the send or fire it immediately once everything looks right.

Segmenting for Higher Opens
A generic message to your entire list performs worse than a relevant one to a smaller group. An agency called Bright Signal segments its broadcast list by client industry, so each group gets case studies relevant to them instead of one message trying to speak to everyone, and their reply rate more than tripled once they made the switch.

What to Never Do
- Never message people who never opted in, no matter how good the offer is
- Never disguise a broadcast as personal correspondence at a scale that clearly isn't personal
- Never ignore an opt-out — a "stop" or unsubscribe request has to be honored immediately
- Never broadcast daily to the same list; frequency fatigue is one of the fastest ways to trigger spam reports
If your number does get flagged despite following these rules, what to do when WhatsApp bans you walks through the recovery steps.
